Hair Clipper Guard Numbers?

Soooo, i just got a hair clipper with 4 guards. never done this before. but they go 3mm, 6mm, 9mm, 12mm. what does that mean?
like i know thats how short they are with 12 being the longest. but how long in inches would that be?

    it meens how short your hair will be after you cut it.the smaller the number,the shorter the cut.

    the 3mm will take you very low, like a jon b cut but without the fade, a 6mm will give you a slightly longer look, and a 9mm and 12mm are just too damm long for sexy

    3mm = 1/8 inch 6mm = 1/4 inch 9mm = 3/8 inch 12mm = 1/2 inch
